Behind That Smile

A  smile  is  just  a  warm  gesture  of  affection
One  smile  can  create  a  thousand
The  smile  on  an  infants'  face  can  cause  such  joy  in  your  world
Smiles  were  meant  to  be  happy
If  I'm  happy ,  then  you're  happy
But  here's  the  reality  of  the  expression
Smiles  were  meant  to  cover  up  the  truth
And  the  truth  is  you're  depressed
Dad  left  Mom  when  you  were  young
Mom  started  drinking  &  doing  drugs.
You  were  forced  to  day care with  no  hug
You  can't  live  your  life ,  because  you're  busy  taking  care  of  others.
People  see  you  smile  and  they  also  smile
Thinking  life  is  great
Yet  no  one  knows  the  reality, that  you  dropped out  of  school and  you're  working  two  jobs
Paying  bills  and  taking  up  adult  responsibilities
Just  another  fallen  victim  of  the  system
Designed  for  you  to  fail   and  become  another  statistic.
But  you  can  wear  your  head  up  high
And  take  pride  whenever you  look  across  your  shoulder
Taking  on  these  mean  streets  at  the  tender  age  of  sixteen
As  you  wear  a  smile on  your  face
Happiness  fills  the  world
Yet  the  problems  don't  fade
And  your  depression  doesn't  wear  off...
So  that  smile  you  see  is  just  an  EXPRESSION !
